Hawthorne Garden Design (HGD) focuses on the unique attributes of each garden site and enhances its beauty through thoughtful and expertly executed designs.  We pride ourselves on solving garden “challenges” and building out a design that fits the nature of the space and the needs of the client. Your garden should be a place of joy!

Climate change is real, and we believe in science-based approaches to your garden. We focus on using native plants as much as possible and try to reduce or eliminate your grass entirely. We also aim to reuse on-site plant material and focus on sustainability during the installation phase and into the future.  These investments will make your garden more adaptable and resilient and will add value to your property.

Founded in 2007 in Washington, DC, Hawthorne Garden Design provides complete design services that include master plans (planting, grading, drainage, lighting, water features, hardscape, and carpentry), construction management, and post-construction site guidance.

Owner Tamara Belt collaborates with clients, masons, woodworkers, and crews of gardeners to create high-quality outdoor spaces that will continue to please for years to come.  She is passionate about plants, art, and good design.

Tamara is also extensively involved in her community.  She serves on the Board and as head of the landscape committee of the Tregaron Conservancy, a non-profit organization that focuses on the restoration and maintenance of a 13-acre historic garden located between Woodley Park and Cleveland Park.  She also volunteers in gardens at local public schools.

Previously, Tamara worked as an environmental economist at the World Bank and IADB after earning a Ph.D. from the London School of Economics.
